Chepstow pupils get broadcasting lesson

THE school day in Chepstow has an extra dimension to it, thanks to the broadcasting skills of pupils.
Year 6 at The Dell Primary can be heard through four speakers around the site on the school’s new £1,000 radio station.
Playing different types of music, from western to classical, a group of six children have been learning how to use the new kit, half of which was paid for by Monmouthshire Building Society and the rest from school funds.
“The idea really is that it’s a soundtrack to the school day, but critically it’s about pupils developing listening and speaking skills along with their confidence and self-esteem,” said head teacher Steve King.
Pupils broadcast three shows, at breakfast, lunchtime and after-school to coincide with various clubs and staff meetings.
Mr King said children learn about different genres of music, programming computers, and can introduce debating and persuasive writing into the schedule.
Some of the children will pass on their skills as the project develops, he said.
