Store giant to spend £350k on Abergavenny upgrade

SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons is to spend £350,000 on improvements in Abergavenny town centre as part of the scheme to redevelop the livestock market.

The multi-million-pound scheme to build a 25,000 sq ft Morrisons supermarket, which includes a small café, 289 parking spaces and a library on the site of the livestock market will back onto Park Road, where the entrance will be.

The market relocated to a new £5 million site at Bryngwyn, near Raglan, which is expected to open in the autumn.

Morrisons will spend £350,000 on improvements, £300,000 of which will be spent on Lion Street as part of the planning consent agreement with Monmouthshire Council, landscaping, and creating additional bus services in the evening and at weekends.

The cash could also be spent on new street furniture, environmental improvements to Bailey Park and £10,000 towards public artwork in Lion Street.

Other work includes improvements to the junctions of Park Road and linking the town centre from the Brewery Yard to Fairfield car park.

Monmouthshire Council, which will carry out the work, has yet to decide how the cash will be spent.

Work to demolish the Victorian slaughterhouses on the site of the town’s livestock market began this week.

Morrisons is working closely with Monmouthshire Council to ensure the buildings can be demolished in accordance with the timescales governed by the protection of bats.

The scheme will incorporate the stonework from the slaughterhouse buildings and the boundary wall in Park Road to ensure continuity of the existing character of the south side of Park Road.

Monmouthshire Council says it will ensure that disruption to residents and users of the site is kept to a minimum during the demolition process.
