Pontypool's Only Boys Aloud star to sing on Comic Relief show

A PONTYPOOL singer known to his family as the Welsh crooner will perform on tonight’s Comic Relief programme after winning a national competition.

Russell Jones, 21, a contestant on last years Britain’s Got Talent with the Welsh choir group, Only Boys Aloud, will feature on the fundraising show after winning a talent competition in Watford.

The young singer competed against a variety of acts that included choirs, guitarists and dogs, to secure the prize and raisemoney for a deserving cause.

The TK Maxx store worker, was nominated to take part in the competition by his sister, Beatrice Jones, who also works at the fashion store.

Beatrice, who is leading this year’s Comic Relief events across the store, decided to enter her brother Russell in the competition after his success on the talent show last May.

The solo singer beat the 14 other competitors with a winning song by Frank Sinatra, and raised £1,099.49, with the whole night raising £10,000.

Russell won a trophy and the prize of a voucher for two people to dine at a restaurant in London, to attend the Comic Relief show in London, and the chance to go to the BBC television studio inWood Lane.

“This is a chance of a lifetime as it will be the last BBC TV show in that studio,” said mum, Claire Jones.

“We will be going at 6.20pm on Friday and many famous people have been there such as One Direction,” she added.

Russell, who his family call the Welsh crooner, because of his love of singing old-fashioned songs, is overwhelmed by his achievement.

“It is amazing, there is so much to take in.

“So many different artists took part all to be anonymously voted for.

“I can’t believe I won.”

Russell plans to sing in Germany this Christmas and is keen to encourage the younger ones to start singing in the choir.

“Russell winning this competition says it all, he has gone on to good stuff,” said Mrs Jones.
