TORFAEN schools competed in an Appetite for Life competition.
The aim was to highlight the importance of improving the nutritional standards of food served in schools in Wales.
The competition saw Years 10 and 11 pupils in Torfaen schools design an oily fish-based main course that could be prepared in the school canteen, along with a fruit-based dessert.
A cook-off was held yesterday at West Monmouth School, Pontypool, where each school produced a portfolio that included a breakdown of the nutritional value of the meal and the process by which the meal was developed.
Judges included local chefs James Sommerin, Franco Taruschio and Lindy Wildsmith.
West Monmouth School, represented by pupils Alana Edmunds and Keigan Ayling, was awarded first place for their entry of Oriental salmon noodles and an apple pie samosa.
The winning team received a day’s cookery course at Franco’s chef room in Abergavenny, plus £200 in cooking vouchers for the school; the second prize was £100 in cooking vouchers and third was £75 in cooking vouchers.
