PICTURES: Boat and five cars destroyed in Caldicot arson attack

Flames two storeys high gutted five cars and a boat near Caldicot last night in what South Wales Fire and Rescue Service described as a deliberate attack.

A Volvo, BMW, two Fiat cars and a specially adapted Nissan vehicle, as well as destroying a 28-foot fibreglass boat in a yard on Seaview Terrace, Rogiet, next to Severn Tunnel Junction railway station.

The vehicles, which were kept in a back garden behind a corrugated fence, were mainly project cars, said owner Frank Taylor.

Mr Taylor, 41, was watching television with his mother at 9pm last night when he saw the fire and raised the alarm.

"I didn't know how far the flames would spread," he said. "The disability car contained two spare mobility scooters for my father, who is in hospital and may be having his other leg removed due to diabetes. That's what we were talking about when I noticed the fire."

The house where Mr Taylor has lived with his parents for three years was not damaged but the blackened wreckage will have to be cleared away, he said.

"The vehicles are good for nothing now," said Mr Taylor, a mechanic by trade. "This is quite a quiet area, nothing like this has happened before."

Gwent Police forensic investigation unit was on site this morning.

A BOAT and five vehicles were destroyed in an arson attack in Caldicot last night.

Firefighters attended the incident at Seaview Terrace, Rogiet, just before 9pm.

The blaze took one hour to put out.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the fire had been started deliberately.

Fire crews from Caldicot, Malpas and Maindee attended.
