LANTERNS lit up the night sky as people gathered together in Gilwern to remember a 21-year-old who died in a car crash.

Tom Baynton, of Gilwern, near Abergavenny, died in a two-car crash in Waun-y-Pound Road, near the former Coleg Gwent site, in Ebbw Vale on Friday night.

Around 100 people gathered together at Gilwern car park 8pm on Sunday night to light lanterns and share their memories.

The crowd of all ages stood holding candles while other candles were placed on the floor spelling out the name Tom.

The event was advertised on Facebook, one person wrote that the event was being held “to say goodbye to a beautiful star and show our up most respects to a sparkling soul who will never be forgotten.”

Over 2,400 people have signed up the Facebook page entitled ‘RIP Tom Baynton’ and left dozens of tributes and photographs of Mr Baynton.

Bunches of flowers have been left at the scene near Cemetery Corner roundabout.

One read: “Rest in peace Mr Baynton, you will be missed. It’s so tragic that you have left being so young. We hope you’re at peace and partying hard up there.

“We’re so glad you're going to live on through your beautiful little boy. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.”

Gwent Police officers were called to the scene at around 7.43pm, along with fire and ambulance services, to find five people had been injured in the crash.

Gwent Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to ring 101 quoting log 459 29/11/13.
