'Tank' takes to the road near Usk

MOTORISTS driving through a Monmouthshire village were treated to the rare sight of an armoured vehicle parked outside a pub.

Owner Alistair Scott, of Llancayo, took one of his five vehicles from his 'tank school' on the road and drove it half a mile away to the car park of the Black Bear pub, Bettws Newydd, on Saturday where he welcomed curious visitors.

Mr Scott and his crew spent two hours showing children and their parents around the British-built FV439 command vehicle.

The arable farmer, who has offered tank driving, tactical shooting and even car crushing at Little Trostrey Farm at Kemeys Commander for over five years, also founded The Tank Museum of Wales on his farm.

He now hopes to make appearances with the tank to raise funds for charity at events.

“Drivers usually stop to take photos when they see the tank and are gobsmacked to see it on the road,” he said.

“We were able to show some families around the 15-tonne vehicle and let them look inside.”

Mr Scott is hoping to display his tank at the Christmas in Caerleon event this Saturday in aid of St Anne’s Hospice but is appealing for someone with a medium-sized lorry to offer to transport it from the farm. Anyone who can help can call 07971 635189.
