A HOST of Christmas events have taken place across Torfaen as residents get into the festive spirit.

More than 40 children from Busy Bees Nursery in Blaenavon enjoyed a trip to Big Pit to meet Mother Christmas, who is busy helping out as her husband Father Christmas is busy preparing for his busiest night of the year.

Children enjoyed meeting Mother Christmas, who shared stories and explaining what life is like at this time of year in the Christmas household.

Children were also given the opportunity to make a range of Christmas crafts to take home, including snowman masks.

Nursery manager Sue Driscoll said: “The children who are aged between two and three years old are very overwhelmed by the experience and had a lovely day.

“This is the second year we have attended and we hope to go again next year as it brings Christmas to life for the children.”

Santas from running groups all over Gwent braved the rain on Sunday for the Usk 10K fun run.

Around 60 runners took part in the run starting at Usk castle and going through the surrounding woods.

Each runner received a Santa hat and on completing the race a Father Christmas medal. Taking part were Pontypool District Runners who picked up four of the six trophies awarded.

Steve Davies won overall and Ray Morgan came in third place.

The ladies race was won by Emma Bayliss, closely followed by fellow member Emma Sowrey in second position.

The course was a very muddy and challenging six miles, but the 24 members of Pontypool District Runners who took part agreed it was a great success as they raised money for Usk School.

Secretary Christine Vorres said: “Pontypool Runners are encouraged to support local events.”
