UPDATE: 6.19pm

TWO people were injured after a car crashed into a tree on the A449 earlier today.


The incident happened on the southbound carriageway near Usk shortly after 4pm.


South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said no other vehicle was involved in the incident.


Gwent Police Inspector Gavin Clifton said the emergency services had remained at the scene following the accident.


South Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent two pumps and two rescue vehicles to the scene of the collision.


A Gwent Police spokesman said: “Emergency services were called at approximately 4.07pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A449 near Raglan.


“Officers from the fire and ambulance service are currently dealing with the collision, which involved one vehicle.


“Two parties have been injured but the extent of the injuries is not currently known.


“The A449 is currently closed southbound as officers deal with the incident and motorists have been advised to avoid the area if they can.


“Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Gwent Police on 101 quoting the reference 419 - 27 December 2013.”
