CROWDS gathered at Chepstow racecourse on Saturday for the biggest race on the Welsh calendar.
Around 8,000 people turned out to watch Mountainous, ridden by Paul Moloney, win the Welsh National trophy. The racecourse held entertainment for all the family in the lead up to the race, which included face painting and balloon model making.
The Six Nations trophy was on display in a marquee and Bonnie Tyler was there as patron to this year’s official race charity, the Noah’s Ark Appeal. Children from the charity followed the Welsh Guards as they brought out the trophy, which was presented to trainer Richard Lee of Herefordshire. Crowds were entertained by Richard and Adam, the Welsh duo of Britain’s Got Talent fame, who sang the Welsh national anthem and The Impossible Dream.
A Chepstow Racecourse spokeswoman said: “It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves at our biggest race meeting of the year. The sun was shining and we were delighted that the big race went to a horse with Welsh connections.” This year’s race was broadcast for the first time by Channel 4 Racing.
