UPDATED: MTV's The Valleys campaign "sexist and tawdry" says senior Tory Monmouthshire councillor - posters have been taken down

Free Press Series: The Valleys roadsign (4254102) The Valleys roadsign (4254102)

UPDATE: 16.50: MTV have apologised for any offence caused by their 'tongue-in-cheek' campaign.

A spokesperson from MTV said: “MTV’s marketing campaign for series 3 of The Valleys is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the iconic Wonderbra advert and reflects the fun and flirty nature of the show.

"It is unfortunate the billboard has had to be taken down as we think our cast look great in the adverts. We apologise if we have offended anyone and hope we haven’t put anyone off visiting Wales”

UPDATE 16.30: Unconfirmed reports from Monmouthshire Council now say the posters have been removed due to threats of legal action.

A spokesperson for Monmouthshire County Council said: "The enforcement officer who visited, advised the occupier the posters should be taken down otherwise there was a likelihood that legal action could be taken.

"By the time she arrived back in the office she had received a call to say that the posters had been removed though this has not been confirmed."

A PR stunt in Monmouthshire featuring semi-clad reality TV stars on a fake “Welcome to Wales” road sign has been dubbed sexist and tawdry by a senior Tory councillor.

The county council’s Bob Greenland has lashed out at the campaign to advertise MTV’s The Valleys, has said the signs were put up without permission and will be removed.

Monmouthshire council says it has received a number of complaints.

MTV put up the offending hoarding on land adjacent to the A465, near Abergavenny, in what the broadcaster described as an “entertaining spin” for the traditional road-side greeting.

But Cllr Greenland, cabinet member for tourism, was not amused.

He said: “This is a sexist and tawdry PR campaign based on outdated stereotypes of Welsh identity. Rather than pander to their attempts to get people to tune into yet another reality TV show we’d rather talk about real talent.

“Our young people are achieving some of the best education results in Wales, our award winning youth service is making a real difference to the lives of people young and old in this county and beyond.

“As the gateway to Wales we take the appearance of our county very seriously. These signs have been put up without permission and will be removed.”

A spokesman for the council said the authority has received a number of complaints and that an enforcement officer was going up to have a look at the sign.

According to a press release from the broadcaster the “sexy pop-ups" feature a "unique driver friendly ‘double sided’ cheeky design that allows a 360 view of the show's best assets.”

These, the release says, “can be best appreciated via passing drivers wing mirrors.”

MTV said the design was being trailed and was planned to be rolled at several crossings into Wales later this week.

The Valleys follows youngsters from South Wales as they move to Cardiff to “live out their dreams”, according to the broadcaster.

Despite widespread criticism from across the region, the show has made it to its third season.

The new series, which starts tonight, will see the show’s participants take their club night Valleywood Nights on tour around the UK and Ireland.

This Programme just reinforces the stereotypical view of Wales as a Country of welfare dependant thickos.
It does nothing positive for us and just reinforces negative views held predominantly by the English.
Great advert for anyone thinking of visiting Wales to experience the culture.

Well maybe but then The Only Way Is Essex and a similar programme about Sloane Rangers in Chelsea did the same about places in England so saying Wales is being singled out is probably wide of the mark. I've not seen it but material of this type is normally exaggerated in editing although the real-life characters contribute the raw material. Sadly, salacious television sells and one can only hope that people take a more balanced view but, given that you'd need a lobotomy to watch this sort of tripe, I'm not hopeful for the audience demographic being sufficiently intelligent to see it for what it is.

In other news... bears defecate in forested areas.

Did people really think this programme would be an in-depth and intelligent analysis of the culture of valleys life? And why are people so personally outraged?

Yes of course it paints the valleys in a bad light. That's the whole point of trash TV like this. And I dare say the local newspapers of Newcastle (Geordie Shores), Essex (TOWIE) and the rest are also outraged. The travel industry is probably also upset by the numerous fly-on-the-wall programmes about drunk teenagers in Magaluf.

I can't see why people take this stuff so personally. If you really think that the outside world's entire view of Wales is dictated through one trashy TV series aimed at teenagers, that says a lot more about you personally than it does about Wales.

I've never watched The Valleys. I've seen clips though and it does kind of seem that it's only for people with double digit IQ's (sorry, fans of the valleys)

I don't think Bob Greenland is in any position to get all sexually repressed though - I mean I just googled him to find out who he is - and I think he might have been a bit of a dirty dawg in the past.. check out these two pictures and then tell me they aren't related......

Assuming it was as you enter Wales from Pontrilas A465 from England as SWA said nr Abergavenny ? and the gateway to Wales ?
Maybe MTV should try M4 ?,so that when you get to the Newport borough of Newport sign coming into Wales ' THE GATEWAY ' might boost our economy ?
Plus as the M4 has so many hold ups due to accidents and is overcrowded it will give the poor sods something to look at whilst they wait for the ' plods ' to decided on when to get the traffic moving again.( 6 hrs later ? ).but then if the traffic is moving...could take us back to square one ...accidents looking at the MTV sign..
But if Cllr Greenland is like our chief councillor I shall say NO more

I have watched this programme, I'm embarrassed to admit, but I did want to see how the people actually behaved. I know now that it's 'scripted reality', in other words, they;re told what to say (if they can remember). Hence you've got some plonker saying (in front of his mother) that he can't wait to go to Cardiff (wow!) and "shag, shag, shag". God, I would be so embarrassed if my son had to do that for a living. Then you've got the girl who has sex with men (on tv) - I am sure there's a name for that - you ever heard of prostitution, love? What I find most annoying is that this girl is then advertised as a 'star' appearing at salon openings etc. Can hardly believe that - imagine - your daughter looking up to someone like that.
Anyway, silly people involved in this, but I'm sure it'll come around & bite their bum at some point (which will probably take place on tv too!).
