Flood warnings for Newport and Chepstow plus ice risk

5:01pm Sunday 2nd March 2014

FLOOD warnings are in place on the Wye and Usk Estuary for Newport and Chepstow this afternoon while the Met Office is forecasting ice in South Wales overnight.

Today's band of rain is moving east across the UK leaving clearing skies and light winds in its wake, leading to frost and ice with the risk of patchy freezing fog.

The Met Office said the public should be aware of the risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces overnight over the whole of South Wales.

Meanwhile flood warnings are in force along the Wye Estuary at Tintern and Chepstow, and along the Usk at Crindau, Malpas Road, Caerleon, Uskmouth and Old Town Docks.

The river Usk had already burst its banks at high tide in Caerleon this morning.

High tide in Newport is expected to reach 7.9 metres at 8.15pm today, as it did at 7.30am this morning, with high tide arriving in Chepstow 25 minutes later and at Tintern 20 minutes after that.
