A NEW Air Training Cadet Corps is to be based in Usk after a gap of 50 years and is looking for volunteers

A detached flight from 2478 Abergavenny ATC is to be based in the Scout Hall, Usk, completing the coverage of the Air Training Corps in East Wales. There was an ATC Flight in Usk in the fifties but it did not last. The new unit will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7pm in the scout hall.

Flight Lieutenant Darran ‘Daz’ Williams, Officer Commanding the Abergavenny Flight, said: “To make the detachment viable they need to have to have a minimum of 10 cadets within the first eight weeks. There are plenty of opportunities for youngsters nowadays, with the various organisations and sports clubs all looking for members, but how many can virtually promise that members will fly solo in a glider before they are 16? That’s before they can even have a provisional driving licence.”

Cadet Fern Jones, 14, from Pontypool, has been in Abergavenny squadron a year and attends meetings on Mondays and Fridays.

“Its all good fun, and very challenging,” she said. “And I have been going through my flying training and looking forward to actually flying.”

The Usk Detached Flight meets on a Tuesday evening at 7pm until 9pm and boys and girls between the ages of 13 to 18 are welcome to come down to find out more.
