FREE Press reporter Robert Owen has swapped his suit for jogging bottoms as he begins training for the Mic Morris Memorial race.

He began training on March 14 in preparation for the 10k race on July 20 from Cwmavon Road, Blaenavon to Pontypool Park.

Mr Owen hasn’t been running since 2007, when he took part in the Cardiff Half Marathon, and since, his exercise regime has been weight based in the gym.

He said: “I have been looking for motivation to start running again so I was happy to take up the challenge.

“I am confident that I will complete the race and hopefully raise a reasonable amount of money.”

On his first training session he completed 20 minutes of interval training, undertaking a one minute run, followed by a one minute walk.

Afterwards, he said: “I felt the burn and now I know I need proper running shoes as my shins are hurting.”

When asked if he would be aiming to be the first male across the finish line, he added: “I am sure the Pontypool Park Run competitors who train weekly will complete it in lightening speed.

"But hopefully my past running experience will stand me in good stead.”

This year, the Free Press is sponsoring the event in a bid to attract 500 runners, and so far, 75 people have signed up.

All proceeds go to Torfaens Mic Morris Sporting Trust, which raises money for Torfaen’s young sports people.

Application forms are available from Cwmbran Stadium and Pontypool Active Living Centre as well as Christine Philpott on 01633 628936 or christine.philpott@torfaen.gov.uk
