Teen caught with air-rifle outside Caldicot primary school

A TEENAGER with an air rifle was spotted outside a primary school as pupils were leaving for the afternoon.

The 16-year-old boy was seen by two Dewstow Primary School pupils in Caldicot, who told teachers who then contacted police.

Police apprehended the teen who had a gas-powered air rifle which was not loaded, but has been destroyed since the March 24 incident.

In 2007 the Violent Crime Reduction act increased the age which you can legally buy an airgun from 17 to 18 years old.

A Monmouthshire County Council education spokesman said: “This was a one-off incident. Two pupils were late coming out of the school and saw a man coming out of his house from across the road with what they thought was a gun.

“The children were concerned enough to report it to the police. They were never in any danger and the school was never in any danger. The school has a variety of procedures in place and does not need to review its safety procedures.”

Cllr Wyndham Conniff, Caldicot Town councillor, said: “My grandson Benjamin, who’s nine goes to the school. It frightened the children regardless of how serious of an attempt it was. We are very pleased that it wasn’t a series incident.”

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “At about 3.15pm on Monday, March 24, we received a call notifying us that a person had been seen on The Close, Caldicot, with an object that resembled a firearm.

“Officers attended and identified the person referred to as a 16-year-old local boy. The object was identified as a gas-powered air rifle which at the time was neither loaded, nor operational (due to no gas). It was disclaimed by the owner and has since been destroyed.

“The 16-year-old voluntarily attended Caldicot Police Station and has been reported for possession of an air weapon in a public place.”

Paul F. McCourt says...

WHAT was this kid thinking? WAS he thinking at all?
"Look at me! I'm 'tough!' I've got a gun!" What was really embarrassing was, it was an AIR RIFLE, with NO AIR!!
That aside, he deserved to be charged with offences under the Firearms Act, but the gun shouldn't have been destroyed! Unless of course if it was munted and of no use to anyone, even if it DID have Gas. If it was in good nick, it should've been SOLD to someone who knew how to eppreciate it. THAT should teach him.
GUNS are NOT TOYS!!! That's what my old man told me.
They CAN be a lot of Fun. Target Shooting, Pest Control (Rats, etc.) and Hunting. They should be treated with RESPECT and SAFELY!
Kids today need to be educated about HOW to be Safe with Guns, but, there isn't really very much to Hunt with an airgun, is there? Target shooting needs to be done in a SAFE place and well awway from built up areas.
This kid was the right age to own and use an Airgun (Pistol or Rifle), but he absolutely lacked ANY knowledge of Safety, Handling or, most important RESPONSIBILITY. He should NEVER have been walking around alarming people with the rifle. He only wanted attention and he got it, and now an innocent air Rifle is destroyed.
NEVER blame the gun! Blame the idiot abusing it.
NEVER be scared of Guns! They do have their uses in Sport and Recreation. Unfortunately though, the UK is just so privately owned everywhere (I could be wrong), there is probably nothing much to hunt anyway. Rabbits are good hunting and put that extra bit of meat in the freezer.
Here in New Zealand we can go Hunting everywhere. There's every kind of Deer you can think of, Pigs, Goats, Hares, Rabbits, Possums (NOT the American Irish O'Possums), and all can be hunted FREELY. In fact, as I write, its The Roar! Deer Hunters are out trying to get their Venison for the freezer.
We have Red Deer, Sika, Wapati, Fallow, Jap, Rusa. ALL in our rugged Kaimanawa Ranges, and Mount Pihanga.
IF there are any Hunters in Wales and you want to fill your freezers, come Down Under and I am very sure you can take your Venison home with you. It can be made into Salami, Sausages ( I can buy Venison Sausages at out local New World Supermarket), Vaccuum Packed, etc. There are places who will Process it for you so you can take it home. They do it to trout, too.
Anyway, I sort of got away from the subject a bit there, but, the point I'm making is, Treat Guns with Respect, Safely, and YOU will be Respected and TRUSTED by your friends and neighbours. It has nothing to do with intimidation. Its RESPONSIBILITY!
Thank You for your time.
