A CHEPSTOW school pupil has been selected to play at the World Youth Chess Championships which are being held in South Africa.
Anna Boyle, who is eight years old and who attends the Dell School, first started playing chess in school during year one, explained the lunchtime chess club tutor Richard Stephenson.
“You could see then that she had potential,” said Mr Stephenson, who is also a parent of a Dell School pupil and co-founder of the town’s chess clubs which are held on Tuesdays at Chepstow Library.
He added: “This is massive for the Dell School.”
Earlier this year at the 2014 Welsh Girls Championships, which were held at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, Anna won the under eight title, while fellow Dell pupil Madeleine Smith came second in the under nine section.
At the time head teacher, Steve King, said the school was “delighted” at the latest achievement by its trailblazing chess players.
He also added that both Anna and Madeleine are part of a group of very strong and talented chess players attending the school who were enjoying success in competitions on both he local and national scene.
