A POPULAR Cwmbran teacher and proud father of four only had five weeks to spend with his newborn baby boy before he suddenly passed away.

Huw Llewellyn, 40, an additional learning needs co-ordinator at Fairwater High School, died on May 25, leaving behind his wife, Carol, and four young children.

His funeral will take place on June 5 at the St Gabriel's Church in Old Cwmbran at 3.10pm, before proceeding to Croesyceiliog Crematorium at 4pm.

A wake will be held at Cwrt Henllys from 5pm.

Mr Llewellyn was diagnosed with cancer at Christmas and had recently been taken to hospital with a serious infection.

Tributes poured in for the "special" teacher earlier this week, after Fairwater High announced he had passed away peacefully, following a severe stroke.

He had became a father for the fourth time just five weeks ago with the birth of his first son, Ieuan, on April 24.

Alison Sherwood, a colleague and friend, said: “He was a proud father with three girls and a little boy, he brought the baby to school one day after Easter. He was so chuffed when he found out he was going to have a baby boy.

“I think the baby was born a week early as he was due on the 5th of May, that was a good thing in a way as he got to spent more time with him. It’s awful really when you think about it that he only got a month with his baby, he was in hospital for parts of that.”

She added: “He found out about the cancer around Christmas time while his wife was already pregnant. I can’t imagine going through that.”

His family have said all members of the community wishing to attend he funeral will be welcome. They have asked people to wear something purple as it is the family’s favourite colour and the colour of Huw's favourite Depeche Mode album.

They have also asked for donations to Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation instead of flowers. Mr Llewellyn had a rare form of cancer known as carcinoid, which are slow growing tumours which affect the neuroendocrine system.

Ms Sherwood added: “Huw was a lovely man, who had such a special relationship with his pupils and their parents. He always did his best for them.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be like on Monday at school as we’ve had half term and haven’t seen the children. It will be really odd without him, he will be greatly missed.”

A memorial Facebook page has been set up for people to share their memories and has already received 1,618 likes. Current and former pupils of Mr Llewellyn have been posting tributes on the R.I.P Huw Llewellyn page.
