PEOPLE turned out in force to support the first Abersychan Spring Festival, with more than 1,800 people taking part.
The festival, which ran from May 18 to 24, was funded by a £5,000 grant from the Big Lottery’s Awards for All programme.
The organiser, Cllr Gwyneira Clark, said she was blown away by the level of support.
The festival week included picnics, giant sculptures, heritage walks, playschemes, and a scarecrow competition, culminating in a festival fun day on the Saturday that included a motorcycle show, gundog display, live music, bouncy castle, bucking bronco, climbing wall, and a bake-off, all held at the Garndiffaith Millennium Hall.
There were 68 entries to the scarecrow competition. The winners were Rose and Bill Price with their family of scarecrows on Cwmavon Road. Second was the Michael Jackson scarecrow on Varteg Road, and third the scarecrow Mrs Bartholomew on Gwyn Crescent.
The Woody Wood Cutter entrant was highly commended.
In the children’s section, first were Worzel and Aunt Sally on Rock Villa, second the Halloween-themed scarecrow on Clos-y-Goedlan, and third the cops and robbers scarecrow on Penylan Road. Highly commended was the scarecrow Princess in Talywain.
