A WOMAN who only started running seven weeks ago has signed up to the Mic Morris race and said that other people should not be scared to give it a go.

Michelle Burns, 47, has never run before nor wanted to, but after being spurred on to join Pontypool Runners First Steps, her outlook on the activity has changed.

The beginners running club was formed last year and Mrs Burns said that she has improved quickly due to the advice and support from the group.

She signed up to the Mic Morris 10k charity race due to take place on July 20.

She said: “It’s my first charity race and my main goal is to just give it my best and complete it, even if I have to walk some of it.

“People new to running shouldn’t be scared to give races a go as people are so encouraging and it’s not competitive but you can set your own goals.”

Mrs Burns, from Abersychan, also achieved 'Park runner of the month' for her consistency and improvement during the races held in Pontypool Park.

She said: “It has surprised me how much I enjoy running and I am improving every week.

“My body shape is also changing as I’m getting more toned already and I have noticed that my clothes are fitting better.”

All donations will go towards the Mic Morris Sporting Trust, which honours policeman Mic Morris, who died while on a training jog in 1983, aged just 24.

The event is expected to draw more than 500, with the Free Press helping to make it the biggest yet.

Anyone interested in taking part can get application forms from Cwmbran Stadium and Pontypool Active Living Centre.

Runners can also get in touch with Christine Philpott on 01633 628936, or email christine.philpott@torfaen.gov.uk

Argus journalist Rob Owen is also running the 10k.

To sponsor him, post cheques made payable to ‘Mic Morris Trust’ to South Wales Argus, Cardiff Road, Newport, NP20 3QN.
