A BLAENAVON cheese company scooped three awards at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

Around 60 companies took part in the annual food showcase and Blaenafon Cheddar Company picked up a bronze, silver and gold. It’s the eighth year that Susan Fiander-Woodhouse and her husband, Gerry, have competed there.

In Farmhouse Cheese, any variety, cow’s milk, Blaenafon Cheddar Company took gold with Black Dram, a hard cheese matured in Big Pit for a distinct flavour. It took silver with a smoked goat’s cheese, Smoked Nanny Goat, in the not cow’s milk class. And with four cheeses in the cheese board class, traditional Caerphilly, mature cheddar Pwll Mawr, Taffy Apple and blue cheese, it took a collective bronze.

Mrs Fiander-Woodhouse said: “It’s really nice to be recognised in your home country and we had great feedback."

“We also won the most voted for stand in the food hall, which the public voted for so I was gobsmacked to have won this, and we won a free stand at the Winter Fair in December.”

The company produces its hand-made distinctive cheddars and goat’s cheese on site in Broad Street, Blaenavon.

Mrs Fiander-Woodhouse runs the company with members of her family, including her daughter Charlotte and son Terence.

Also gaining recognition is Newport-based Tiny Rebel Brewing Co who have won Sweden’s Gothenburg Beer Festival – the Beer of the Festival. A beer collaboration with Dark Star Brewing Co, Rebel Alliance is a 6.5% ABV New Zealand Saison ale. It is the 19th beer award the company has picked up in two years. Co-founder Bradley Cummings, said: “We’re really pleased as this award shows we’re doing the right thing."
