HISTORY fans travelled back to medieval times in Abergavenny yesterday at a family event at the town’s museum.

Daring visitors could meet mercenary bowmen and were able to take part in archery and jousting activities at Medieval Mayhem – and the museum is gauging whether there is the prospect of bringing archery there on a more permanent basis.

Abergavenny Museum’s curator Rachael Rogers said: “The activities are suitable for all people, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re six or 106.”

Themed arts and crafts activities were also available and children and parents could make and take away shields and princess hats, dress in costume and explore a range of medieval objects.

In the afternoon the Illyria stage company performed Robin Hood as part of the Borough Theatre’s festival of outdoor theatre, and later Macbeth was staged.

Earlier in the week, the castle had staged Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine in association with the town’s theatre.

Inspired by the museum’s Sites of Inspiration exhibition, which was opened by the Welsh Government’s culture minister John Griffiths AM last week, a drop in family craft activity session will be held at the museum on Wednesday, from 10am until midday and again from 2pm until 4pm.

The activities cost £2 per child.
