FORMER pupils posed for a keepsake photograph as their Torfaen school closed for the final time.

Kemys Fawr Infants School closed its doors on July 18, with its pupils transferring to Griffithstown Primary School.

The remaining pupils posed for a photograph which was presented to them as a keepsake.

Deputy head teacher Jen Cooper said: "All of the staff and pupils would like to say a very big thank you to all who have supported Kemys Fawr over the years.

"Kemys Fawr has been a very happy and fantastic school with lots of great memories. The children, parents and staff have been the best."

The school held an open day on June 28 for pupils, parents and staff, past and present.

More than 200 people attended to share their memories of the school, which opened in 1959, and look at photographs.

The decision to close the school followed a six-week consultation at the end of 2012, which saw a petition containing 743 signatures submitted from parents to the council.

Head teacher, Nick Blackburn, said: “We are a small infant school that will loom large in people’s memories for years to come.”

The closures are part 21st Century Schools programme which aims to tackle surplus places and deliver a mixture of new, extended and refurbished schools across Torfaen.
