A "GENEROUS" Chepstow woman was treated to champagne and cake today, to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Yorkshire-born Bessie Lundie, who now lives in Castle Court Residential Home, had a "brilliant" day to mark her 100 years.

Mrs Lundie, born Bessie Worthington in Kilnhurst, in South Yorkshire, moved to Chepstow to be closer to her family a couple of years ago.

She grew up in Yorkshire with her sister and brother and attended the local school before working as a librarian in Swinton.

She married her husband Edward Lundie, known as Ted, in 1937 and lived in Kilnhurst all her married life.

Mr Lundie died in 1973 after a career as an administrative oficer and industrial chemist with the National Coal Board Scientific Department.

Mrs Lundie has one son, Victor, and is grandmother to the late Gregory, Charlie and Bethany, as well as two great-grandsons, Thomas and William.

To celebrate her birthday, Mrs Lundie was taken out by her family for lunch and later celebrated at Castle Court with champagne and cake.

Her granddaughter, Charlie Lundie-Sadd, said: "She's just the most gentle, thoughtful and generous person. As children she was like a mother figure to my sister and I.

"She was involved in the Conservative club and helped at the hospital for forty years. She's always done a lot for the community. She had a brilliant day yesterday."
