THE First Minister is urging people to give the Welsh Commonwealth Games team a hero's welcome at a special reception this evening.

The welcome, hosted jointly by First Minister Carwyn Jones and Presiding Officer Dame Rosemary Butler AM, will be held for Team Wales from 5pm at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay.

Many prominent members of Team Wales will be at the event, including Pontypool gymnast Frankie Jones, who scooped six medals and the David Dixon award, Natalie Powell who won the 78kg judo gold and Elena Allen who took silver in the women’s skeet shooting.

The First Minister said: “Team Wales has done Wales extremely proud. Their determination and drive has truly paid off, with the Team smashing their ambitious medal target despite some early set-backs.

“The Commonwealth Games are a special opportunity for Welsh athletes to compete against the world’s best under the Welsh flag, and I know that the competitors who represented their country at these wonderful Games consider it a huge honour.
