A GOLF competition will be staged tomorrow in memory of a Blaenavon man.

Dan Jones, 42, died suddenly on September 7 — and tomorrow’s event, at Pontypool Golf Club (noon start), has been organised as a tribute to him.

Mr Jones’ friends rallied to organise the event.

And within 24 hours, 100 players signed up for the 25-team competition which will be attended by two Welsh rugby stars.

The plan is to turn the competition into an annual event as Mr Jones — husband to Nic and father of three-year-old Tomas — was a keen golfer.

David Edmunds, 45, said: “Dan was my closest friend. He was so well supported and so well liked. He was elegant, classy and a very good listener.

“Dan was close to perfect in every way. He was one of those people you want to be, and was such a motivational golfer.”

Partnered with Mr Edmunds, Mr Jones — who worked on an oil rig in the North Sea — won golf’s 2006 Victory Shield in desperate weather conditions at the Pyle and Kenfig course in Bridgend.

Even as club champions, their victory against the ex-professional Peet brothers was a huge upset. It was the first time that the Pontypool club won the prestigious tournament.

Mr Edmunds — whose wife Mandy and friend Johnathan McCarthy are among the memorial event’s organisers — said: “Golf is quite a selfish sport so it was great that we got to do it together.”

All profits from the event will go to mental-health charity Mind.
