A PORTSKEWETT man has been re-united with his mother after nearly 58 years apart.

Kevin Scott, 57, of King Harold's View, first laid eyes on his biological mother Pat Johnson, 78, on Monday after last seeing her as a six- week- old baby. He has spent the last 15 years looking for his mother and found her just 10 days ago with the help of his neighbour Dikka Cram, 49, who spent three days researching.

All Mr Scott had was his birth certificate with the name of his mother Zena Mavis Sculthorpe who has always been known as Pat. Ms Cram found the long lost mother online as she who used to be a company secretary of an agricultural firm A and R Cramphorn Plant Hire in Leicestershire.

Mr Scott said: "This week has been brilliant - it's what we've both wanted. I have never been so happy to find my mother after all this time.

"It has been so surreal. I had a pretty hard time as a child, I was an only child but now I have a step-brother, a half-brother and so many more - a whole family. I’ve always wanted a brother and now I have Neil whose 50-years-old.”

He added: “It’s everything I could have ever wished for. It was a bit of a gamble to take on but I was very lucky with the response that I got. I had a huge fear of rejection which was horrendous but I’ve got what I want.”

The former Llanwern steelworker saw the recent ITV show Long Lost Family hosted by Nicky Campbell and Davina McCall which featured the Quarry Maternity Home in Lincoln where he was born and decided to have a go at finding his birth mother again.

He was adopted at six-weeks-old and spent his life in Northern England before coming to Cwmbran and then Chepstow.

He has lived in Portskewett for the last six years and found out the name of his birth mother in 2005 after he went to social services. He said: "My mother was forced to give me up as that was in the 1950's when society wasn't as relaxed.

“I’ve always known I was adopted, I always felt like a square peg round hole but now it feels right. I can’t thank Dikka enough – I spent 15 years looking and she did very quickly.”

Mr Scott left a message with his stepfather’s company and received a phone call from his mother 11 days ago. Mrs Johnson and her husband George had booked a trip a year ago with the Stroke Association to Weston-Super-Mare for this week and met up with her long lost son.

Mr Scott, a father of four, will be celebrating his 58th birthday on November 29, his first birthday with his mother.

Mrs Johnson said: "After all these years the last 10 days have been a dream. I couldn’t sleep when I found out I was going to meet him -it has been very emotional and everyone has been crying.

“I last saw him at six weeks old. I tried to look for him once but my sister was dead set against it.”
