WITCHES and bats in Usk enjoyed the Ugly Bugs Ball today as part of a Hallowe'en fundraiser.

More than 60 children and 70 adults celebrated All Hallows' Eve at Usk Rugby Club with a disco and arts and crafts. Children were all wearing fancy dress and took part in making bats out of black sugar paper and colouring pumpkins.

The fundraiser which raised around £300 was in aid of the Usk Park Project which is a charity set up by parents of the town to raise £90,000 for a new park.

Children from Usk Primary School and the Sunflower Nursery attended the ball which had spooky sweet and savoury food including cocktail sausages in pastry which were made to look like bloody bandages.

Abby Barton, 37, trustee and parent, said: "It was amazing - all the children had such a wonderful time. We were surrounded by little witches and devils even a little girl who was Frankenstein's monster. The youngest child was a two-week-old baby who was adorable as a pumpkin and the oldest was 9-years-old.

"Virtual designs of the park were available to view at the ball. Everyone has been so supportive of the park and the children have been involved in putting their ideas forward - they wanted a concealed trampoline."

The charity launched in June 2014 and has already raised more than £7,500. The group will be working with Monmouthshire County Council to apply for funding from various organisations.
