A YOUNG volunteer has become one of the faces of a new campaign aimed at getting young people involved in lifesaving.

Isobel Hill, nine, from Griffithstown, Pontypool, is the star of a video on the new St John Cymru Wales youth section website.

It has been developed to show youngsters aged five to 25 the benefits of volunteering with the charity.

The website also features videos from other St John Cymru Wales members from Gwent, explaining the benefits they get from being part of the organisation.

They include Harriet Morgan, 10, a Badgers member from Newport; India Harrison, 16, from Pontypool, who is St John Cymru Wales’ Cadet of the Year; Megan McStay, six, a Badger in Newport Division; and Lauriann Beech, 20, a Youth Leader in Newport.

Isobel, who has been a member of St John Badgers for four years, was delighted to be able to share her experiences on the video in an effort to get more young people to get involved as a member or leader.

She said: “At first I was really shy and quiet, but during Badgers I’ve grown a lot of confidence.

“Badgers have really chan-ged my life and I’ve made a lot of new friends, and, although we all come from different schools, we are still really good friends.”

The newly-launched website has been funded with support from Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA).

It explains how people aged five to 25 can get involved with St John Wales’ youth section, either by becoming a member of Badgers, St John Cadets, as a youth leader, or by becoming an adult volunteer.

Keith Dunn, St John Wales’ chief executive, said: “Young people are our future, and St John Cymru Wales is proud to provide many opportunities and development programmes for youngsters aged between five and 25.

“These programmes help teach vital lifesaving first aid skills, provide a place to create friendships and opportunities for lots of exciting new challenges.

“The more youngsters we get involved in our lifesaving work, the better it is for everyone.”
