OVER 100 runners got into the festive spirit to join in the annual Boxing Day fun run held in Cwmbran.

Organised by Griffithstown Harriers, the event attracted 120 runners who dressed up in festive costume.

Race organiser, Peter Roberts said that this was the biggest turn out yet.

“People are here to have fun and we couldn’t be happier with the amount of runners who have turned up and who made an effort by wearing a costume,” he added.

The run saw the group complete two laps of North Fields in Cwmbran which totals five miles, while youngsters were invited to complete one lap.

First to complete the race was Fairwater Runners member, Daryll Barnby, and first woman over the line was Natasha Cockram, who is a member of Cwmbran Harriers.

The first youth was 16 year old Luke Davies of Pontypool Runners, second was Aidan Williams, 14, and the third was James Avery, 12.

Miss Cockram, 22, decided to sign up to the race while home visiting her parents from The University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

A keen runner since the age of 11, the Psychology student won this year’s Route 66 half marathon for the second time in a row.

She said: “Minus the rain and cold weather I love coming back to race here. I used the race as part of a training run and loved every moment.

“I also love coming back to be able to race in front of my parents. I wouldn't be where I am today without their support.”

She has one more track season left running for the university and will be finishing in May, after which she hopes to focus on road racing and completing marathons.

The event will raise funds Luca, age seven, from Cwmbran who was diagnosed with high-functioning autism and needs a autism support dog.

The total raised is still being worked out by the running club who will continuing collecting for him throughout the year.
