THREE people were rescued from flats above an Abergavenny restaurant after a fire ripped through a building today.

Firefighters from across Gwent were called to Sundarbon Bengal Cuisine, on Monk Street, at 3.26am.

One person was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny by ambulance at 4.06am.

Two others were able to get out before help arrived while a Gwent Police spokesman said another two people jumped from a first floor window.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s head of control Jennie Griffiths wrote on Twitter that the three storey building has been “severely damaged”.

Monk Street remains closed and police officers and firefighters are still at the scene.

The Gwent Police spokesman said a joint investigation with firefighters to establish the blaze’s cause will start once is it safe.

Firefighters from Abergavenny, Blaenavon, Ebbw Vale, New Inn, Brynmawr, Maindee, Aberbargoed, Tredegar, Cwmbran and Abersychan were called to deal with the fire to stop it spreading to other properties. It had been brought under control by 5.44am.
