BALLET schools across the country will learn about toxic shock syndrome (TSS) as part of a Caerwent’s family’s awareness campaign.

All ballet schools who are part of the British Ballet Organisation will be receiving a photo and the story of Natasha Scott-Falber as part of their newsletter next month.

The musical teenager died when she was 14-years-old on February 14, 2013, of TSS from using her first tampon.

Each ballet school will be made aware of the symptoms of TSS as part of a 13 days of awareness campaign launched by the family and backed by the Free Press.

The Angel School of Dance, where Natasha was a member, will be holding a dance lesson on February 14, the start of the 13 days of awareness, and will be handing out leaflets on TSS at the dance studio in Chepstow Leisure Centre.

Angela Fryer, principal of Angel School of Dance, said: “We have quite a lot of girls at the dance school who knew Tasha. We wanted to get together and spread the word on TSS as much as we can.

“It is very important that young girls are made aware of it.”

Mandy Scott, Natasha’s mother, said: “Angela felt as strongly as I did that there is a real need for girls to know about this, especially dancers, who start using tampons before other young girls because of their dancing.”

According to toxic shock syndrome information service (TSSIS), about half the reported cases of TSS are associated with women using tampons, but it can also be caused by infections following burns, boils, insect bites or following surgery. The condition can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early.

The family will be holding a 13-day awareness campaign starting with a 5km fun run on February 14 at the Old Station in Tintern. The awareness campaign will culminate in a gala concert on February 26 which will become National Toxic Shock Syndrome Awareness Day and would have been Natasha’s 17th birthday.

The gala will take place at Newport Centre and will include performances by the Angel School of Dance and WAWWA’s Musical Youth Theatre Company.
