YOUTH workers and young people celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes in Bulwark and Caldicot today.

Monmouthshire Youth Service’s Amanda Edwards and other staff spent the morning flipping the pancakes outside the Severn Bridge Club in Bulwark in the morning and outside the Asda supermarket in Caldicot in the afternoon.

She said: “It was a young people’s consultation. We were just getting out and about, finding what they do with their free time and what we can provide for them.

“We have done lots of roadshows before but not on Pancake Day before.”

There were other celebrations across the county. At Chepstow Methodist Church, a pancake party was held yesterday evening in an attempt inject fun and to reclaim the day as a Christian festival, Reverend Andrew Webster said.

He said attendees took part in a pancake Olympics and other activities involved making and tossing pancakes.

And he said while the festival meant they would indulge themselves with pancakes, it was also important that they would “live more frugally” for the next six weeks before Easter.
