A PROPOSAL to include an e-cigarettes ban as part of a council’s no-smoking policy looks set to get the green light this week.

Caldicot councillor Tony Easson suggested the move at a Monmouthshire council meeting last June and officers have backed it. The council’s policy on smoking was passed in September 2006 and staff were told of an expected change last September.

The move has been recommended because the use of e-cigs “would dilute the previously clear messages around the ban on smoking”, and because as an unregulated product, the safety of them is “not fully understood”.

The head of regulatory services, David H Jones, said the council would not want to see smoking “re-normalised”.

Council workers will be banned from smoking at work and when dealing with people using council services. This includes in all council buildings, on business premises and while working away from the council.

Breaches “may result in disciplinary action”.

Cabinet member Cllr Phil Murphy will make a decision on the policy on Wednesday.
