FIVE riders at the Triley Fields Equestrian Centre in Abergavenny are to attempt the Three Peaks challenge in aid of the Riding for Disabled Association (RDA) in South Wales.

Becky Eardley, 20, Lisa Lade, 42, Sueanne Sandford, 43, and Rosalind Jeffries, 49, who are all from Monmouthshire, and Nicky Kelly, 45, from Llanhilleth, are hoping to climb Blorenge, the Sugar Loaf, and Skirrid Fawr in just 10 hours on March 28.

The self-titled Triley Trotters are undertaking the challenge after being inspired by one of their fellow riders, David Chaffey, 31, from Ebbw Vale. Mr Chaffey, who is registered blind, has been taking lessons at the centre since September after a seven-year absence due to poor health.

Mr Chaffey, who suffered from heart problems for four years, underwent a heart transplant at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in January 2011.

Following the transplant, Mr Chaffey spent four months in hospital overcoming complications before embarking on intensive physiotherapy back home. He had to learn to walk again before being able to return to riding just five months ago.

A telephonist with Nevill Hall and Royal Gwent Hospitals, Mr Chaffey was awarded a British Empire Medal for his services to the NHS and to voluntary and charitable services last month.

Inspired by Mr Chaffey’s story, the Triley Trotters have raised £700 for RDA South Wales and are hoping to reach their target of £1,000 by the end of next month.

Mr Chaffey has been riding horses since the age of 11, having been given riding lessons as a birthday present by his parents.

He said: “I’m grateful for the Triley Trotters for doing this and for promoting riding for the disabled. They’ve been very good in helping me rebuild my confidence.”
