Pensioner injured in mugging
AN 89-year-old woman suffered a broken hip and arm and lost #60 when she was mugged for her handbag in Edinburgh. Her 86-year-old friend was also knocked to the ground by the thief who struck outside the Safeway supermarket in Comely Bank at lunchtime on Monday.
Last night, a police spokesman appealed for a man seen talking to the two women to come forward.
On-site accident
A man was last night undergoing emergency surgery last night following an accident at an opencast site. The 32-year-old, a sub-contract worker at the Cobex site at Forth, Lanarkshire was taken by helicopter to Law Hospital, Carluke. Police said they would not be naming the man until relatives had been informed.
Boy cyclist killed
A five-year-old boy cyclist was killed when hit by a car in High Street, St Combs, near Fraserburgh.
Knife sentence
A YOUTH waving a large knife and a rolling pin, who had to be disarmed at the Arran Outdoor Centre last August, was sentenced to 60 days detention in Kilmarnock yesterday. Joseph Breslin, 17, of Tarfside Oval, Cardonald, Glasgow, had had a row with his girlfriend.
Hard hitter
A GARDENER who beat his wife with the plaster cast on a hand he had injured was ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service yesterday. Sheriff John Dean said at Kilmarnock that the only reason he was not jailing John McKee, 29, of Holehouse Road, Largs, was that his wife Elizabeth wanted him back.
Police hold man
A MAN was in police custody last night following the death of Mr Neil Harkin, 41, after an alleged assault in Cowal Place, Dunoon, around 3.45am yesterday. The man, who is aged 43, is expected to appear at Dunoon Sheriff Court today.
New hillphones
THE Mountaineering Council of Scotland yesterday announced that it is to extend its hillphone system to include 15 more Munros. Those included for the first time are South Glen Shiel ridge and The Saddle, Ben More and Stob Binnein, Beinn Heasgarnich and Meall Ghaordaidh and the Eassains to the west of Loch Treig.

THE Chinese government has sent a team of seven diplomats to Edinburgh to establish a consulate in the city.
Schools net deal
EVERY school in Edinburgh is to be connected to the Internet over the next three years as part of a #6m deal between the council and cable company Telewest Communications.
History of stone
THE first up-to-date history of the Stone of Destiny since it returned to Edinburgh last year has been published by Historic Scotland. The Stone of Destiny: Symbol of Nationhood also records the role played by the group in securing the return of the artefact.
