A FAMILY'S holiday to the Dominican Republic took a strange turn when they landed 1500 miles away in Mexico.

Mrs Jean Sulaiman of Fort William fixed up the break to the Carribean island as a treat for her sister, Mrs Miriam Miller, of Glasgow, who was recovering from major surgery. Mrs Sulaiman's daughter Khalda, 17, and Mrs Miller's daughter, Lisa, 15, made up the party of four.

However, when the plane arrived, they recognised the flag at the airport was Mexican.

Khalda said: ''We couldn't believe it when the plane landed in Mexico.''

The holiday destination should have been Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, but they were taken to the Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta.

The group's travel agent, AT Mays in Fort William, offered to transfer the party to their original destination, but after hearing that it could take up to two days they decided to stay in Mexico for the two weeks.

But they had to pay extra for evening entertainment, which would have been included in the Dominican Republic, and their spending money was worth less in Mexico.

An AT Mays spokesman said: ''This was a genuine mistake which arose from the names of the two resorts being mixed up. We accept it's our fault.''

He said the company would try to make amends when a written account of what happened was received from Mrs Sulaiman.
