Twenty-two people were evacuated from a burning building after fire broke out in a top-floor flat yesterday.

Families fled in their nightclothes - seven people from the blaze block and 15 from the neighbouring close - after a tenement building in Glasgow's east end went up in flames.

Residents looked on as firefighters fought the blaze, which broke out at around 4am in Culrain Street, Shettleston.

One woman, who lives in a neighbouring block, was woken up by her dog barking. She then raised the alarm, alerting other neighbours to the situation.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene, and 15 firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze at its height.

A 71-year-old man was treated at the scene for mild smoke inhalation before being taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment. No-one else was injured.

An inquiry is under way but some residents have already been allowed to return home.

A fire service spokesman said the blaze had started in a top-floor flat but had spread to the roof space, causing extensive damage.

He added: "Investigations are at an early stage and it's too early to say how the fire started."
