Fri Sep 21-Sat Oct 13, 7.30pm, Citizens' Theatre, Gorbals Street, Glasgow, £9.50-£16 (£3-£7), 0141 429 0022 It's a good weekend for William Shakespeare fans as the leading theatres in Glasgow and Edinburgh open their autumn seasons with two of his best-loved plays.

While the Royal Lyceum fields the award-winning Liam Brennan as the jealous Leontes in The Winter's Tale, the Citz returns to the play that put the theatre on the map in 1970 when the young David Hayman starred in an all-male version that was so controversial it made front-page news.

Guy Hollands's production of Hamlet is unlikely to cause such outrage, but the omens are good for his period staging, not least because of Andy Clark in the lead role.

Regulars at the theatre will remember the Blairgowrie actor for his pitch-perfect imitation of Sid James in Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick, as well as entertaining appearances in Vernon God Little and The Bevellers.

At 32, he has the experience to take on such a demanding role and the youthfulness to play the aggrieved son.

"This is a good age to play it," he says. "I possibly couldn't have played it six or seven years ago.

"I've found myself thinking:'I can actually understand what I'm talking about without looking at the footnotes.' And if I can understand it, anyone can."
