SCOTTISH cricket officials are to launch an investigation after it was revealed that a top club had been playing for more than 50 years on a wrong-sized pitch.

The fault was discovered after Edinburgh Accies had beaten Drumpellier in the Coronel Cup at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The umpires refused to comply with the requests of Drumpellier to measure the wicket before or during the match. But when dimensions were checked at the end, they found it was four feet short of the regulation 22 yards.

Drumpellier officials will discuss the matter before deciding whether to demand a replay or lodge a protest with cricketscotland.

A source at the club said: ''Our instant reaction is that the match should be invalidated because it was not staged under proper conditions.'' However, Sandy Scotland, convener of umpires, said any alteration to the result was unlikely. He added: ''The laws of cricket state that if the umpires are satisfied that the wickets are correctly pitched then that is the end of the matter.''

The Raeburn Place ground is not the one used for Scotland's internationals.

The Saltires' headquarters is across the wall at the

Grange club.
