BUDAPEST: Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin said today his
country may apply this year for membership of the European Union.
Chernomyrdin said: ''We support Hungary's submission of an application
for admission to the European Union. Russia is preparing to do the
same.'' Chernomyrdin was in Budapest on an official visit to try to
boost economic ties with Hungary, which formally applied today to join
the EU.
