GLASGOW Airport is to launch new weekly flights to the Greek islands.

Flight firm Teleticket plans to introduce the routes to Crete capital Heraklion from May 20 until October 21 and to the beach resort island of Rhodes between May 21 and October 22.

Heraklion is a hotspot for tourists especially those interested in archaeology.

It is famous for its churches and monasteries, and is close to Knossos Palace, the most spectacular Minoan palace in Greece.

Both new routes will boost Glasgow's reputation of being Scotland's favourite airport, as well as its biggest and busiest.

Teleticket also plans other destinations from Glasgow later in the year.

Its offering two flights, on October 9 and 12, to Lanzarote capital Arrecife.

Holidaymakers can also fly off to Tenerife on October 10 and 14 or explore Paphos in Cyprus with flights on October 11 and 12.

Teleticket will also be flying tourists to Las Palmas. Flights to the capital of Gran Canaria take off on October 11 and 13.

Managing director Neil Chapman said: "These additional regional Scottish flights in October will expand our already successful Scottish flight programme from Glasgow."

Meanwhile passengers flying between Scotland and England continued to face chaotic scenes today when a computer software fault brought the baggage system at Heathrow Airport to a standstill.

Dozens of flights between London and other airports across the UK - including Glasgow - had to be cancelled last night and this morning because of the breakdown.

BA predicted that the disruption would continue for at least another 24 hours.
