ONE of Glasgow's largest nightclubs has suddenly closed its doors and could be put up for sale.

Archaos, which has been in the city for more than a decade, shut on Saturday night without warning.

The cavernous venue, which has six bars spread over three floors, was once favourite with thousands of revellers who would flock to its many club nights at the Skybar, Roundbar, Hotbar, Betty's and Yang.

But staff and clubbers today said it was struggling to attract the numbers required to sustain the huge operation.

The Queen Street venue, once owned by millionaire club boss Stefan King, was one of the first superclubs in the city, but it has since changed hands several times in its long history.

Current owners, the 3D Entertainment Group, had initially planned to refurbish the venue.

But bosses from the Milton Keynes firm now plan to wait until next year to gauge Glasgow's club scene before deciding the fate of the site which could see it being sold off.

Clubber Stephen O'Hara, 22, of Milton, called Archaos after discovering it had suddenly closed.

He said: "They told me they were running at an operating loss and had decided to close it until next year when it would reopen under a new name."

The 3D Entertainment Group was formed in January. It has a turnover of more than £100million, employs 2000 workers across the UK and owns Jumpin' Jaks, The Savoy Nightclub and Club 30 in Glasgow city centre.

A 23-year-old staff member, who asked not to be named said: "It closed on Saturday night, it was just down to a lack of trade. It was struggling to attract the numbers needed to sustain a club of that size.

"All the staff are being transferred to the company's other clubs."

A spokesman for 3D Entertainment said: "We are reviewing all of our sites and as we have three other venues in Glasgow we have decided to close Archaos while we determine what we want to do with it. We will either invest or sell."
