SPLASH pools, climbing frames, tents, slides and swings have all made it through to the final designs for the Leys Splash Park in Witney.

Work has already begun on installing water pipes and it is now hoped the park will be opened in July or August for the summer holidays.

The final plans have been unveiled by Witney Town Council, which has raised about £230,000 to pay for the project.

Volunteers from the Liven up the Leys community campaign group have added £20,000 from a series of fundraising activities.

Campaigner Deb Benn, who has helped organise events to raise the money, said: “There’s nothing else like this in Witney, and we’re miles from the sea so this will be fantastic for families in the summer.”

Chris Holliday, chairman of the town council’s recreation committee, added: “We think it’s going to be the best park in West Oxfordshire.

“Seeing the final designs has made a big difference and it has gone viral on Facebook.”

Mr Holliday added: “Some people were asking where children will play while the park is being built, but there is a whole field next to it and it’s going to take some time, as it’s a quarter-of-a-million-pound project.”

Three companies bid for the splash park element of the design and the town council chose SSP Water & Play to build it.

Features will include a zip wire, a tunnel that vanishes into a mound, 15 water jets and the Witney Towers climbing frame.

There is a also a peace garden and the park will be locked out of hours to prevent problems with vandalism.

Claire Swan, council facilities manager, said: “This is the culmination of three years’ hard work by officers and the community group and t’s very exciting to be at the final stage where our vision is going to be realised.

“There is an opportunity for all-year round, challenging, exciting and risky play and we hope it will prove attractive to multi-generational users.”

The scheme has attracted support from local businesses including Norton’s Cafe Bar in Langdale Gate, Witney, which handed over £1,500, electrical contractors Tech-Lec Services, also in Witney, which donated £500 and the Shake Shop in the town’s Market Square, which splashed out £500.

Liven Up the Leys campaigners still need to raise £5,000, and the scheme has now been shortlisted for a Jewson’s Better Communities award.
