AS an occasional user of the legal tracks on Salisbury Plain (by foot, by cycle and, sometimes, in a 4x4) I was pleased to see an article regarding the crackdown by the police relating to hare coursing and other illegal activity.

However, I was most surprised to read that a group of 4x4 drivers had been stopped on what was described as a ‘permitted bridleway’. Unless I have missed a major change to the law, motorised vehicles cannot legally use a bridleway. A byway, yes; a bridleway, no.

I hope your reporter won’t be responsible for anyone illegally driving on the Plain thinking that they are within the law when they are not.
