AN ABERGAVENNY school is flying the flag for Monmouthshire.

Llanfoist Fawr Primary was chosen by Monmouth MP David Davies to represent the constituency and design a flag that represents their area or community in the 2015 Flag Project.

The flag, designed by key stage two children and hand-sewn, is among 80 flying for the first time in London's Parliament Square this week.

The design represents the historic county of Monmouthshire and features the iconic Monnow Bridge in colours representing both Wales and Monmouthshire.

The unique event is the culmination of a nationwide parliamentary 2015 flag project launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and led by artist Jonathan Parsons, to celebrate two historic anniversaries this year - the 800th year of the sealing of the Magna Carta and the 750th anniversary of the Simon de Montfort parliament.

Class teacher, Matt Davies said: β€œIt was an honour to be selected as the school to represent Monmouthshire in this exciting project. Through their research children have learnt a great deal about the democratic foundations of our country.”

The flags will fly in Parliament Square until May 22 and again at Runnymede on June 15.
