MORE than 1,000 people enjoyed Kate Humble’s inaugural Big Day Out festival over the weekend.

After a windy morning the sun shone on the outdoor family festival held at the Humble By Nature working farm in Penallt, near Monmouth.

The sold-out event was attended by 1,300 people, with around 300 people camping over the weekend.

Speaking after opening the festival on Saturday morning, the television presenter said the aim was to get people outdoors and having fun.

She added that she hoped the outdoor cooking demonstrations encouraged people to try it themselves, and that they enjoyed the experience of “muddy fingers and sheep poo’”.

“The more people cook outside the less scary it becomes,” she said.

“Today is all about food and alternative ways of eating.”

She also thanked everyone for supporting the event, especially author and food stylist Genevieve Taylor who jointly organising the festival as part of her book launch.

The event saw festival goers treated to a packed day of fun, food and family activities, that also included live music, a craft festival and foraging walks.

Star attractions included choirmaster, Gareth Malone OBE, who created a choir of festival revellers, Bang Goes the Theory and Gadget Show presenter Dallas Campbell and chef and TV presenter Matt Tebbutt, who gave an insight into the science of pizza on the farm’s outdoor pizza oven.

Verity Azer travelled from Bristol to the festival with her four-year-old daughter Meliha.

“I like the variety of all the food that is here,” she said.

“I also like the organic and ethical producers.”

She added: “I’m looking forward to trying everything and seeing the demonstrations.”

Bethan Green, who came with her husband, son Alfie and her mum praised the “lovely atmosphere”.
