A NEWPORT youngster - who has never missed a day of school - will receive an award recognising her achievement this week.

St David’s R.C Primary School pupil Francesca Barton, 11, of the Gaer, has never had a day off school since her first day in reception. It is a record which has last seven years.

Her dad, Christopher Barton, a professional self-employed musician and the director of music at Newport Cathedral, said his daughter was a fit and healthy girl who enjoyed school.

“My daughter is just finishing primary school and has gone from reception [to year six] without missing a day,” he said proudly.

“She is a good all rounder and a very good musician who plays grade four piano - which is exceptional for that age.

“She is also interested in other things such as gymnastics and is a good swimmer."

Mr Barton added the family were careful with her diet and fitness, and said that despite Fran having some illnesses in the last seven years, she has never been unwell enough to miss school.

The high-achieving gymnast plays in the National Children’s Orchestra and is also academic; enjoying subjects including maths and English taught by her year six teacher Mr Davies.

“She is interested in teaching [as her career],” her dad added.

“All parents are proud of their children [but apparently] this achievement is very rare.”

Mr Barton said they were only aware of how rare it was not to miss a day of school when the head contacted them to inform them of how impressive it was.

In September Francesca will attend St Josephs’ secondary school and is ‘looking forward’ to the new challenge.

St David's head teacher Bree Ellsworth called her achievement ‘amazing’.

“We warmly congratulate Francesca on her wonderful achievement,” she added.

“I have worked at St David's School for 32 years and never before has this been achieved by any of our pupils.

“Her success will form a part of St David's history.

“She is an inspiration."

The year six pupil will be recognised for her achievement at a special awards ceremony on Friday morning.
