A MAINDEE schoolgirl will take part in a full moon walk in the Brecon Beacons this month to raise funds for St David’s Hospice in memory of her granddad.

Ten-year-old Alena Griffiths will take part in the St David’s Hospice Once in a Blue Moon Walk on July 31 with mum Julie Grifiiths as part of her triple fundraising effort to raise over £400 for St Davids’ Hospice.

Alena plans to walk to the peak of Pen y Fan starting at 8.30pm and aims to complete the route set by the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team in three hours to finish around midnight.

"St David's Hospice Care looked after her grandfather Thomas Edward Griffiths when he was unwell three years ago," Ms Griffiths said.

"They looked after him at home in his last months when he was in his eighties, so we have been doing a lot of fundraising in memory of him."

The charitable kid is no stranger to fundraising- back in 2012 she raised £475 alongside her friend Jessica, by cutting 19 inches off her hair; and earlier this year she took part in the 18 mile Dalmatian Bike Ride, which raised over £50,000 for St David’s Hospice.

The pupil also plans undergo the chop for a second time by having another 20 inches of her hair cut off in September, which will complete her triple fundraiser.

Mum Julie Griffiths who has worked with St David’s Hospice for the past five years, dealing with day to day running of the branch, is proud of her daughter's fundraising efforts.

“Most of the fundraisers are her own ideas, and for that, I’m immensely proud of my daughter and what she’s achieved,” she said.

"She is really looking forward to it and it is a night time walk so it should be nice as were going up with glow sticks.

"It will be lovely."

Ms Griffiths has helped Alena raise money in several charity events, including conquering the Newport Transporter Bridge in 2014.
