FORTY children donned aprons and chefs hats to make pizza when they visited a Newport restaurant.

The youngsters, who attend Shirenewton After School Club, near Chepstow, spent the morning learning how to make a cheese and tomato pizza with staff at Pizza Express on Spytty Retail Park.

The club’s manager, Melinda Phillips said yesterday’s visit was the highlight of the week for the children, who are pupils at Shirenewton Primary School.

The children began the cookery session by making dough balls to form a pizza base before adding their toppings of cheese and tomato. They also took part in a quiz linked to pizzas and their ingredients and were each given a certificate.

Ms Phillips added: “They were thrilled to be able to take their pizza away with them. They had been really excited about the visit and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“It also helped them to developed their cooking skills.”

The group visited Newport Wetlands to eat their pizzas and enjoy an ice cream.
