A NEW sun cream applicator that was invented by two Cwmbran mums has officially gone on sale.

Mother-of-four Kelli Aspland, 36, and mother-of-three Laura Griffin, 32, have invented a new sun cream applicator called Solar Buddies, which helps children apply sun cream.

By January, the pair had made their first prototype and just over six months later it has gone on sale.

They have had 5,000 made, and since July 13 - when the product went on sale - they have 467 orders placed.

Mrs Griffin said: “We can't believe the positive feedback we've had.”

Before the items went on sale, people were able to pre-order their item online, with people requesting it from as far away as Canada and Minnesota.

She added: “Kelli and I would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

“It's been a tough journey but also a very exciting one and we feel this is just the beginning.”

In May, the pair took their product into St David’s School in Cwmbran to observe how 200 pupils, aged between four and 11 years old, got to grips with the product.

As part of the day, the pair ran a workshop teaching about the importance of staying safe in the sun, and skincare.

The products official launch was in March and was supported by the charity Melanoma UK.

By the end of April their invention was in full production.

The idea came as the mums noticed that when their children were in primary school, they would make a mess when trying to apply their own sun cream.

The shape of their bottle is chunky so it is easier to grip; the roller ball controls the flow of the cream, while the sponge helps children to rub the lotion in.

The bottle is refillable so parents can choose a product most suitable for their child.
